Our Journey

2012

A Big Idea

Tyme (Take Your Money Everywhere) was born in 2012 to make banking simpler and more affordable. Founded by Coenraad Jonker and Tjaart van der Walt, we built technology that turned cash into mobile money and back again — helping people move money quickly and cheaply.

2015

Backed by Global Strength

In 2015, Tyme was acquired by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), giving us the resources to grow. In 2017 we were awarded a full banking licence in South Africa — the first in almost 20 years. We also founded Tyme Group, our international arm, to bring digital banking to other emerging markets. By 2018, CBA exited international markets, selling its majority stake to African Rainbow Capital.

2019

TymeBank is Born

On 26 February 2019, we launched TymeBank, South Africa’s first digital bank. With no branches, no monthly fees, and easy account opening in under five minutes, we started delivering truly accessible, low-cost banking to millions of South Africans.

2020 & Beyond

Growth and Expansion

TymeBank quickly became one of the fastest-growing banks in the country, signing up millions of customers through our kiosks in stores.

Your Money is Protected with CODI

At GoTyme Bank, your peace of mind comes first. That’s why we’re proud to be a registered member of South Africa’s first Deposit Insurance Scheme (DIS), which became operational on 1 April 2024.

The DIS is managed by the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI), a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank. The Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) was created to protect qualifying depositors in the rare event that a bank faces financial trouble.

Here’s what it means for you:

If a bank becomes insolvent, qualifying deposits are protected up to R100 000.00 (subject to the rules and requirements of the DIS).
The deposit insurance cover applies automatically. You are not required to
apply for cover or pay any additional fees.

As part of this initiative, GoTyme Bank works closely with CODI to protect your financial security.
