How do I pay a stranger safely online with PayShap?

• 22 Oct 2026

Pay only once you are happy with the item. Always check the registered name that shows before you confirm an Instant Payment via PayShap. Because a PayShap payment cannot be reversed once you authorise it, the safest habit is simple: see it, check it, then pay.

Before you pay

  • Meet somewhere safe. For local sales, meet in a busy public place and check the item before you pay.
  • Check the name. When you pay by cellphone number or account number, the recipient's registered name shows before you confirm. If it does not match the seller, stop.
  • Avoid paying deposits to people you do not know. A seller who insists on money before you have seen anything is a warning sign.

Never approve a Payment Request you did not expect

Some scammers send a Payment Request and hope you approve it without thinking. A Payment Request is only a request. Nothing leaves your account until you authorise it, so if a request arrives from someone you do not recognise or for an amount you did not agree to, reject it.

Selling something? You stay safe too

You do not need to share your account number to get paid. Give the buyer your cellphone number or send them a Payment Request for the agreed price. Wait for the money to arrive in your GoTyme Bank account before you hand over the item. You will get a notification the moment it does, so there is no fake proof of payment to worry about.
