How can I send money to family members without their bank details?

07 Sep 2026

Send it to their cellphone number. With an Instant Payment via PayShap you do not need an account number or a branch code, just the number they bank with, and the money is in their account in seconds.

Their cellphone number is all you need

Open the GoTyme Bank app, tap Pay and choose to pay a cellphone number rather than an account. Enter the number they bank with and we check automatically whether an Instant Payment via PayShap is available to it.

Add the amount and a reference so they know what the money is for. Before you confirm, you will see the registered name attached to that number, which is your chance to make sure it is going to the right person. Authorise with your fingerprint, face ID or a one-time PIN and it is on its way.

What happens on their side

Nothing, and that is the point. There is no app to download and nothing for them to accept. It is not a wallet, so nothing sits waiting to be collected.

The money arrives in their normal bank account in seconds and their bank notifies them, exactly as it would for their salary. They can spend it, swipe it or draw it straight away.

The one thing they do need

They need a bank account at a PayShap participating South African bank, with that cellphone number linked to it. What they do not need to give you is their bank account number.

Read the name before you tap send

Check the name that comes up before you confirm. PayShap payments cannot be reversed once authorised, so a moment reading the screen is worth more than any other precaution.

If your family member does not have a bank account, send them a money voucher instead.
