How do I split rent with housemates using PayShap?

• 19 Oct 2026

Have one person pay the landlord, then send each housemate a Payment Request via PayShap for their share from the GoTyme Bank app. It lands in their banking app with the amount already filled in, they approve it and the money is in your account instantly. Sending the requests is free.

Set up a monthly rhythm

  1. Agree on each person's share of the rent, electricity, water and Wi-Fi.
  2. A few days before rent is due, send each housemate a Payment Request with a reference like "Nov rent".
  3. Once everyone has paid, pay the landlord in one go.

Collecting before you pay the landlord means nobody has to front the whole rent and wait to be paid back.

Paying the landlord

Rent is usually more than R5,000, so think about how you pay it. An Instant Payment via PayShap costs a flat R7 from R5,001 up to the R50,000 limit and arrives instantly. If you pay a few days early, a Standard Payment is free and lands at another bank within 1 to 3 business days.

Keep the peace

You get a notification as each housemate pays, so there is no guessing and no awkward knock on a door. Payment Requests via PayShap can be sent to anyone who banks with African Bank, Capitec, FNB, Nedbank or Standard Bank.
