What is a PayShap payment request and how does it work?

• 21 Sep 2026

A PayShap payment request lets you ask someone for money and get paid in seconds. You send a request straight to their phone, it arrives in their banking app with the amount already filled in, they approve it and the money is in your GoTyme Bank account right away. Sending one is free on the GoTyme Bank app.

How a Payment Request via PayShap works

In the GoTyme Bank app, select Menu > Payment Request, enter their cellphone number or account number, choose their bank, add a reference and add the amount. The request arrives as a notification in their banking app. They open it, review the details and tap to pay, authorising with their fingerprint, Face ID or a one-time PIN. Because it runs on PayShap, the money reflects in your account within seconds of them approving.

A Payment Request is a request, not an instruction

Nothing moves until the other person approves it, so a Payment Request via PayShap can never pull money out of your account on its own. That is what makes it safe to send and safe to receive. You also don’t need to share your account number to get paid - a cellphone number is just fine. It works from GoTyme Bank with customers at African Bank, Capitec, FNB, Nedbank and Standard Bank, and you can even send a request to your own account at another bank to move your own money across.

Ask for money the easy way with a Payment Request via PayShap and GoTyme Bank.
